Muslim students at Concordia University in Montreal are expressing deep concerns over the Quebec government’s proposal to eliminate prayer rooms in post-secondary institutions.
The prayer room at Concordia serves as a vital hub for the Muslim community, welcoming over 500 students daily. For many students, the presence of this prayer space was a significant factor in choosing to study at Concordia.
The Quebec government is set to introduce a bill targeting prayer rooms in public institutions, particularly colleges and universities, and also aiming to prohibit full face coverings like the niqab among post-secondary students.
Students at Concordia feel these proposed measures unfairly single out the Muslim community, posing a challenge as they would need to seek alternative spaces for prayer on campus.
