This Saturday, Montreal will witness a significant gathering called “In the Streets for Quebec,” a demonstration that will not only draw the attention of unions but also various community groups expressing their discontent with the Legault government.
Claudia Fiore-Leduc, the campaign manager for the Quebec Network for Independent Community Action, expressed surprise at the government’s recent aggressive approach towards independent community groups. She highlighted the continuous introduction of bills specifically aimed at undermining the autonomy of these groups.
Joining forces with the unions at the upcoming demonstration are five provincial groups representing 4,500 community organizations. Fiore-Leduc emphasized that the challenges faced extend beyond financial concerns, stressing that attacks on autonomy equate to attacks on democracy.
In addition to funding issues, community groups are speaking out against chronic underfunding amidst escalating needs, with the government imposing budget constraints on crucial sectors like health and education.
The demonstration will see the participation of major unions, including the FTQ federations, CSN, CSQ, CSD, FIQ, FAE, APTS, SPGQ, and SPGQ.
