The Quebec government’s proposed Bill 9, which aims to restrict religious symbols and practices in public spaces, has sparked concerns among individuals, including daycare professionals Mehwaish Raja and Gabby Kazzaz from Montreal’s West Island region.
Expressing disbelief, Raja stated, “It feels surreal that we are facing this reality.” Kazzaz added, “It feels like an assault, being forced to choose between our identities and our professions.”
Raja further emphasized, “It’s unjust. Our great-grandparents came to Canada for a reason, not to have our basic rights infringed upon. This is disappointing, deceptive, and not the Quebec we know.”
Montessori Kiddy Kat Preschool and Daycare, established 11 years ago, employs a diverse group of 10 teachers serving around 30 children. Owner Mehwaish Raja raised concerns about how Bill 9 could impact children’s education, stating, “Children need to see themselves reflected in their teachers. Stripping away their faith and individuality could have a negative effect on their development.”
Kazzaz echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of diversity in Quebec and the need for children to be exposed to different backgrounds and beliefs.
Anita Bartha, director of a daycare at Dawson College, emphasized the importance of exposing children to various cultures and traditions without focusing on the religious aspects. Anne-Marie Bellerose, president of FIPEQ, called for a moratorium on Bill 9, questioning the necessity and potential consequences of banning religious symbols in daycare settings.
