On Monday, Polytechnique Montréal will honor the 14 victims of the tragic event that occurred on December 6, 1989, by awarding 14 scholarships in their memory. These scholarships, each valued at $50,000, will be granted to Canadian female engineering students who are pursuing graduate studies.
The scholarships are a significant part of the 12th annual White Rose Campaign, a fundraising initiative aimed at promoting and encouraging women to pursue careers in engineering. The campaign has been instrumental in increasing the representation of young women in the engineering field.
Since the tragic incident in 1989 that claimed the lives of 14 women and left many others injured, the white rose has symbolized Polytechnique Montréal’s commitment to commemorating the victims and advocating for gender equality in engineering.
In a recent press release, Maud Cohen, President of Polytechnique Montréal, emphasized the importance of the White Rose Campaign in fostering greater participation of women in engineering and called for public support to help achieve this goal.
Nathalie Provost, Secretary of State (Nature) and a survivor of the 1989 massacre, will also be honored by being inducted into the prestigious Order of the White Rose Hall of Fame for her tireless dedication to advancing women in engineering.
The scholarship award ceremony is set to take place on December 1 at 10 a.m. in the Lorne-M.-Trottier Atrium of the Lassonde Pavilions at Polytechnique Montréal.
