“Breakthrough in Toronto: Tentative Agreement Reached, Averting Historic Housing Worker Strike!”

Over 800 frontline workers employed by Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) and Toronto Seniors Housing Corporation (TSHC) could be in for better working conditions as their union, CUPE Local 79, has recently revealed a potential agreement with the two organizations.

This development follows a period of significant employee mobilization aimed at delivering essential services to tenants throughout the city. In a historic move this autumn, members of Local 79 demonstrated unprecedented unity and resolve by securing the strongest strike mandate ever at TCHC and TSHC, signaling a new era of solidarity among housing staff.

President of CUPE Local 79, Nas Yadollahi, emphasized that the progress made in negotiating this preliminary deal is a testament to the collective efforts of workers who have united to demand fair treatment.

Yadollahi stated, “This potential agreement is a direct outcome of workers coming together, unified in their push for fairness. Our members have clearly expressed the need for safe working conditions, adequate support to provide high-quality services to tenants, and this agreement acknowledges their collective strength.”

However, the agreement is still subject to ratification by union members, with specific details yet to be disclosed.

Toronto Community Housing stands as the largest social housing provider in Canada, while Toronto Seniors Housing is responsible for housing and services catering to elderly residents.
