“Eglinton Crosstown LRT Nears Completion of Key Tests; Opening Timeline Remains a Puzzle”

Ontario’s Eglinton Crosstown LRT Nearing Completion Amid Uncertainty

After a series of delays and setbacks, the Ontario government has announced that the Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit (LRT) project is on track to complete its revenue service demonstration on Monday. However, the final steps towards opening the line to the public remain shrouded in uncertainty.

Metrolinx president and CEO Michael Lindsay confirmed that Monday marks the culmination of a 30-day revenue service demonstration process to ensure the line’s operational readiness. Despite challenges faced during the testing phase, officials remain optimistic about the project’s progress.

Lindsay acknowledged the frustrations surrounding the prolonged timeline of the Eglinton Crosstown, emphasizing the meticulous approach taken to ensure the system functions reliably under all conditions.

While a specific opening date for TTC riders has not been disclosed, discussions are underway to finalize preparations for passenger service ramp-up and staff training. Lindsay emphasized the importance of ongoing collaboration with the TTC to ensure a seamless transition to full operation.

The Eglinton Crosstown LRT, a 19-kilometre, 25-station transit line, has faced multiple delays since construction began in 2011. Despite setbacks caused by legal, construction, and pandemic-related challenges, officials remain committed to delivering a high-quality service to the public.
