May Admits Budget Vote Blunder, Vows Never to Repeat Mistake

Green Party leader Elizabeth May expressed disappointment in Prime Minister Mark Carney’s decision to support tax credits for enhanced oil recovery in the federal budget, calling it a “significant betrayal.” May had been assured by Carney’s office that these tax credits would not be included. Despite this, a memorandum of understanding was signed with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, committing Canada to extending tax credits for enhanced oil recovery. The reversal on this decision led to environmentalist concerns and Minister Steven Guilbeault leaving the cabinet.

May, who had previously voted in favor of the budget, now regrets her decision and vows not to support such actions in the future. While she acknowledges the importance of meeting climate targets, she stands by her principles and maintains that the inclusion of tax credits for enhanced oil recovery goes against environmental goals.
