Police in Surrey, British Columbia, have identified the victim of a fatal shooting that occurred last week in an effort to accelerate the ongoing investigation into the incident.
The victim has been identified as 26-year-old Jaskaran Birring from Chilliwack. According to homicide investigators, Birring had prior interactions with law enforcement and was suspected to be involved in illegal drug activities.
Arriving officers discovered Birring with critical injuries, and despite attempts to save his life, he succumbed to his wounds.
Preliminary findings indicate that the shooting, which took place just before midnight on Friday, was a targeted attack connected to organized crime. Shortly after the incident, a Dodge Ram pickup truck was found engulfed in flames not far from the crime scene.
Authorities are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has video footage from the vicinity of where the burning truck was discovered, near 136 Street and 115 Avenue, to come forward with information.
This marks the sixth homicide in Surrey for the year 2025.
