Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is gearing up for a busy holiday travel season, with preparations in full swing to welcome over three million passengers from December 1 to January 12. Marking a new record, the airport is anticipating peak travel days on December 18, 22, and 29.
Highlighting their readiness, Andy Margolis, YVR’s Chief Operating Officer, emphasized the airport’s advanced snow operations equipment, surpassing that of the entire Lower Mainland. Margolis mentioned that teams have been practicing since August in anticipation of the surge in travelers.
In a recent media tour, YVR showcased its enhanced preparedness for the holiday rush, unveiling new X-ray equipment at select security screening checkpoints. These state-of-the-art scanners now allow passengers to keep electronics and liquids in their bags, minimizing the need for additional searches and ensuring a smoother screening process.
While only two of the seven checkpoints currently feature the new technology, YVR aims to upgrade all by the end of 2026. The airport has also made upgrades to the baggage control system to enhance baggage delivery efficiency.
With a focus on improving the overall travel experience, YVR hopes these advancements will reduce delays and provide a seamless journey for passengers during the holiday season. Reflecting on past challenges, Margolis shared that significant investments have been made post-winter 2022, with a commitment to continuous enhancements each year.
One notable change includes a trial program for de-icing selected early-morning flights directly at the gate to streamline taxi times. Additionally, YVR has introduced complimentary parkade parking for quick pick-ups to enhance passenger convenience.
Toronto and Calgary top the list of domestic holiday destinations, while Hong Kong and San Francisco lead the international destinations from YVR this season.
