Laval Police Unveil ‘Projet Vigilance’ in Bold Crusade Against Escalating Extortion Schemes Targeting Businesses

In an effort to combat organized crime’s influence on local businesses, the Laval police have launched a new initiative called Projet Vigilance. This strategic plan, which kicked off on Wednesday, focuses on prevention, investigations, and building stronger relationships with merchants in the area.

The primary objective of Projet Vigilance is to enhance information sharing and address the rising threat of extortion within the city. Karine Ménard, deputy director of the SPL’s criminal investigations division, emphasized the need to put an end to criminal pressure on businesses.

Ménard stated, “Our message is straightforward: the violent activities orchestrated by criminal groups in Laval must cease. We urge merchants to collaborate with us in confidence, as any piece of information can have a significant impact.”

Since October 31, authorities have launched 61 investigations related to this issue, with some instances tied to the group known as “Les Grecs” in the Chomedey district. To boost security measures, various police units will be ramping up their presence throughout Laval, visiting establishments to engage with owners and employees, collect crucial information, and provide guidance on deterring extortion attempts.

It is essential to note that businesses coerced into making payments to criminal organizations are recognized as victims, not perpetrators. Therefore, business owners are encouraged to report any incidents they encounter.

Individuals with details regarding intimidation or extortion are urged to contact the Info-Police line at 450-662-INFO (4636) or dial 911 in case of an emergency.
