A challenging fire has displaced residents of two apartment complexes in Thorncliffe Park. Toronto Fire Chief Jim Jessop described the ongoing situation as unprecedented. The fire began at 11 Thorncliffe Park and spread to 21 Overlea Boulevard, leading to evacuations due to high carbon monoxide levels.
As of an update, the fire remains active in a tight space between the buildings, making firefighting efforts difficult. Firefighters are facing challenges accessing the fire due to the narrow gap, resorting to innovative methods like using garden hoses.
Chief Jessop emphasized the unique nature of this fire, stating that it is unlike anything the Toronto Fire Service has encountered before. While efforts are ongoing, damage to the buildings and units is inevitable.
There is uncertainty regarding when the fire will be fully extinguished and residents can return. Safety remains the top priority, and the buildings will stay evacuated until firefighting operations are completed.
After the fire is out, engineers will assess the buildings for safety before residents can come back. Meanwhile, affected residents are advised to contact their insurance providers for assistance.
