“Vancouver Island Shaken: Iconic Mill Shuts Down, Erasing 350 Jobs in Growing B.C. Economic Crisis”

The closure of a pulp mill on Vancouver Island has been confirmed as a permanent decision, impacting approximately 350 employees as the latest mill to shut down in British Columbia.

Domtar, the company behind the mill, has stated that ongoing challenges such as low pulp prices and difficulties in sourcing affordable fibre in the region have led to the closure of its Crofton pulp mill.

In response to the closure, Domtar is actively considering various options for the future use of the site, aiming to find a sustainable solution.

Forest Minister Ravi Parmar expressed deep concern for the affected workers, highlighting the immense challenges faced by the forest sector including market instability, climate-related issues, and trade tariffs.

The closure of the Vancouver Island pulp mill adds to recent shutdowns in the region, with West Fraser Timber announcing the permanent closure of its lumber mill in 100 Mile House by the end of 2025, affecting around 165 jobs.
