Distraction Theft on the Rise: Vancouver Seniors Targeted by Thieves
The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) is warning the public about a concerning trend of distraction thefts, particularly targeting seniors, that is on the rise throughout the Lower Mainland.
In just November alone, there were a total of 20 reported distraction theft incidents, with East Vancouver identified as a hotspot for these crimes.
Constable Darren Wong from the VPD described how thieves employ cunning tactics, such as using fake jewelry to distract victims while discreetly stealing their genuine valuables.
Wong explained, “They will engage the unsuspecting victim, offering jewelry and creating a distraction. Meanwhile, they skillfully remove the victim’s actual valuable items, like necklaces, without them even realizing it until it’s too late.”
Seniors are often singled out as vulnerable targets for these thefts, prompting the VPD to advise the public to stay vigilant and keep a close eye on their surroundings. Wong emphasized the importance of having open conversations with elderly family members and neighbors to educate them on what to watch out for.
While some arrests have been made in connection with these crimes, investigators believe that distraction thefts are a widespread issue that extends beyond individual culprits. Wong highlighted the challenge in pinpointing a specific group responsible for these thefts, indicating that the problem appears to be escalating in both Vancouver and the wider Lower Mainland region.
If anyone suspects they have fallen victim to a distraction theft, the police urge them to immediately contact 911 for assistance.
