Breaking: Deadly Crash Shuts Down Highway 406, Police Launch Investigation

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are currently investigating a tragic incident that took place on Highway 406 late Wednesday night.

According to a statement by OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt on social media, the collision occurred in the southbound lanes close to the third line in St. Catharines. The vehicle involved in the crash was carrying three individuals aged 18, 19, and 20.

Tragically, the 19-year-old female driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll into a ditch. As a result, the 18-year-old female passenger was ejected from the car and was hit by a passing vehicle on the highway, leading to fatal injuries.

The young woman from Thorold, Ont., sadly succumbed to her injuries at the scene, while the other two occupants sustained minor injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital.

At present, the exact cause of the collision remains unknown. Sgt. Schmidt noted that the road conditions were snowy and wet at the time of the accident and mentioned that investigators would also be examining seatbelt usage.
