“Hands Off! QS Leader Sol Zanetti Demands Ottawa Keep Its Distance from Quebec Referendum”

As the talk of a potential sovereignty referendum grows louder, pro-independence parties in the National Assembly are calling on the federal government to respect the process. Québec solidaire co-spokesperson Sol Zanetti has even advised Ottawa to refrain from interference.

A recent report by Radio-Canada has revealed that the Carney administration is already in talks on how to handle the Parti Québécois (PQ) platform in light of a possible referendum in 2026. An anonymous source shared that Ottawa aims to be prepared should the PQ win the upcoming election.

In response, the PQ and Québec solidaire expressed cautious optimism, hoping for a more respectful approach compared to past experiences in 1995. Zanetti emphasized that Quebec’s sovereignty matters are internal and not for federal intervention, recalling past controversies during consultations.

“We will stand up for Quebec. This consultation is for Quebecers alone; it’s not your concern. Mind your own business, and we will keep an eye on you,” stated Zanetti firmly during a press briefing.

The PQ acknowledged the federal government’s readiness but stressed the importance of abiding by democratic norms. MNA Alex Boissonneault highlighted the need for propriety in the process, hinting at past grievances with Ottawa’s involvement.

Conversely, the Quebec Liberal Party (PLQ) sees the federal government’s preparations as a reasonable response to the sovereignty debate.

PLQ MNA André Morin defended the government’s actions as “logical and normal” in creating a balance against the sovereignist movement ahead of a potential referendum.

During a subsequent media session, PLQ leader Pablo Rodriguez avoided discussing the referendum, emphasizing the focus on winning the upcoming election to prevent such a scenario.
