Abbotsford Police Unveil Innovative Program to Combat Extortion and Root Out Violence

The Abbotsford Police Department (AbbyPD) has launched a new initiative called Project Disengage to address extortion-related violence in the community. This program aims to provide intervention and support for individuals who are involved in or at risk of being recruited into situations linked to extortion-related violence.

According to AbbyPD, many young people and individuals are enticed into these criminal activities by the promise of quick financial rewards or due to challenging life circumstances. Organized crime groups and traffickers often target vulnerable individuals for such illegal activities, leading to severe legal consequences and harm to the entire community’s safety.

Sgt. Paul Walker emphasizes that Project Disengage is an awareness campaign offering help to those vulnerable to these crimes. The initiative includes posters displaying messages about available support for individuals seeking to exit such dangerous lifestyles. By contacting the Project Disengage helpline, individuals can receive the necessary support to step away from extortion-related violence.

In the past two years, extortion-related crimes have been on the rise in Abbotsford, Surrey, and neighboring communities, sometimes escalating into shootings or property damage. Despite this, Walker notes that most extortion-related reports do not involve violence, with the majority being threats of violence through various means like phone calls, emails, or text messages.

AbbyPD has received 58 calls related to extortion in the last two years, with nine shootings specifically linked to extortion calls and other incidents involving arson on vehicles. However, many victims do not report these threats to the police, highlighting the importance of raising awareness and encouraging individuals to seek help.

If you or someone you know needs assistance in avoiding or leaving extortion-related violent situations, please contact the Project Disengage helpline at 778-880-6610 or visit abbypd.ca/extortion.
