“Eglinton Crosstown LRT Nears Finish Line, Sets Stage for Imminent TTC Launch”

After 14 years of construction, the Ontario government has announced that the Eglinton Crosstown LRT project has achieved “substantial completion,” paving the way for the TTC to soon unveil the 19-kilometre, 25-station line.

In a statement released by the Ford government, it was confirmed that independent engineers have given the green light for the line to begin operations, marking a significant milestone in the project.

The TTC is set to take over “full operational control” of the Line 5 Eglinton Crosstown, with plans to finalize an opening date in early 2026.

This announcement follows a ceremony attended by Ontario Premier Doug Ford, Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow, and other officials, where they revealed a commemorative plaque for Line 6 Finch West, which is scheduled to open this Sunday.

Initially launched in 2011 under the Ontario Liberal government and Metrolinx management, the Eglinton Crosstown faced delays due to legal, construction, and testing challenges, compounded by setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
