Montreal dancer and choreographer, Thea Patterson, is delving into the depths of loss and grief through a poignant performance titled “Un-Nevering” at Espace Libre.
In this moving show, Patterson, along with two close friends, bravely navigates her personal journey of mourning after the tragic loss of her husband and artistic partner, Jeremy Gordaneer, in 2021.
Describing Jeremy as a multifaceted creative spirit, Patterson fondly remembers him as a painter, sonographer, and a playful soul. The performance not only pays tribute to his memory but also serves as a platform to explore the often shunned and daunting emotions of grief.
Patterson emphasizes the importance of creating a safe space for discussing grief, a topic that is commonly avoided in society. The show weaves together a tapestry of emotions, incorporating a soundscape featuring Jeremy’s voice recordings, his piano improvisations, and vocal harmonies provided by collaborators Rachel Harris and Elinor Fueter.
Drawing inspiration from the Celtic tradition of keening, the performance aims to externalize and honor grief through vocal expressions, providing solace and companionship in times of mourning.
The heartfelt tribute piece by Patterson is currently running at the Fullum Street venue until December 6, inviting audiences to immerse themselves in a profound exploration of loss and healing.
