End of an Era: Vancouver’s Iconic Hastings Racecourse to Close Doors Forever, Announces Operator

After over 130 years, a beloved horse racing tradition in Vancouver is coming to an end.

Hastings Racecourse and Casino has announced the permanent closure of thoroughbred horse racing at its East Vancouver facility. Wayne Odegard, regional vice-president of Great Canadian Entertainment, described the decision as extremely tough, given the historical significance of Hastings Racecourse and its role in British Columbia’s horse racing scene.

The closure was driven by a business decision due to the lack of economic feasibility for continuing horse racing at Hastings. Recent media reports highlighted that the provincial government had stopped the company’s share of slot machine revenues, contributing to the decision.

Responding to the news, the Vancouver Humane Society applauded the funding cut, viewing it as a critical step towards phasing out an industry dependent on government support amidst declining attendance, reduced revenues, and ongoing animal welfare issues.

Odegard emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting affected team members and racing participants as they consider their options for the future of thoroughbred racing in the province.
