After completing his first week as a regular Member of Parliament, Steven Guilbeault announced his resignation from his ministerial position. The well-known environmentalist and former Minister of Environment received a warm send-off from his Liberal caucus colleagues, who congratulated and thanked him for his principled actions. Guilbeault, previously Minister of Heritage, made headlines with his protest against a controversial memorandum of understanding involving an oil pipeline project.
Guilbeault’s decision to step down was fueled by his opposition to the memorandum signed between Ottawa and Alberta, which granted exemptions to the province on greenhouse gas emissions regulations. He expressed concerns that these exemptions would hinder Canada’s ability to achieve its greenhouse gas reduction targets by 2030. Despite his resignation, Guilbeault remains committed to his role as a Member of Parliament for Laurier—Sainte-Marie and maintains confidence in the government.
