Laval Enhances Winter Safety and Efficiency with Innovative Measures
Laval is taking proactive steps to enhance winter safety and efficiency with the introduction of nearly 5,000 smart traffic signs that can be remotely controlled, a pioneering move for a Quebec municipality.
In addition to this groundbreaking initiative, the city has allocated nearly $25 million for the modernization of its snow-removal fleet by 2027. This includes the acquisition of new trucks, sidewalk vehicles, and state-of-the-art spreaders.
Mayor of Laval, Stéphane Boyer, emphasized the importance of efficient snow removal and safe streets for the city’s residents. Despite facing budgetary challenges, the decision was made to invest in upgrading the fleet for improved efficiency and sustainability. These enhancements, coupled with the integration of cutting-edge technologies, aim to deliver a superior service to the community not only this winter but also in the years ahead.
Laval’s winter operations now involve 740 vehicles and over 500 skilled professionals, with an additional $20 million being allocated for private contracts.
The innovative smart signs are designed to illuminate prior to street clearing to minimize parking disruptions and are synced with the user-friendly Info-Stationnement app.
A recent survey revealed that 98.4 per cent of citizens found the signs to be clear and easy to comprehend, positioning Laval as the pioneering Quebec municipality to implement this advanced technology.
