The Canadian government has unveiled a groundbreaking $1.7 billion program, the Canada Global Impact+ Research Talent Initiative, which aims to draw over 1,000 top researchers from across the globe to Canada over the next ten years. Industry Minister Mélanie Joly and Health Minister Marjorie Michel introduced this initiative as a significant effort to rapidly recruit elite scientific talent, emphasizing its potential for economic, health, and societal advancements.
This initiative, outlined in Budget 2025, is a strategic move to position Canada as a leader in attracting top-tier researchers. It includes a $1 billion allocation for new Canada Impact+ Research Chairs to support experienced researchers and their teams, covering salaries and necessary infrastructure. An additional $120 million will be dedicated to supporting emerging international early-career researchers, with $400 million earmarked for enhancing research infrastructure.
