Rogers Launches Satellite Texting Service with Key Communication and Navigation Apps
Rogers Communication has introduced a groundbreaking satellite program that offers essential apps for seamless communication and navigation in areas with limited to no service. This new service, set to officially launch on December 9th, debuted in July with a beta program that saw the successful transmission of over one million texts.
Among the key apps included in the initial launch are popular platforms like WhatsApp, Google Maps, Accuweather, C, and CalTopo. As developers continue to update their apps to be compatible with satellite connectivity, the list of available apps is expected to expand in the future.
Future plans for the satellite service include the addition of data and voice services, such as emergency 911 services, in the coming year. The beta trial revealed a high demand for this service, with top usage areas identified in Garibaldi, B.C., and Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario.
A recent survey conducted by Rogers showed that 86% of Canadians believe satellite-to-mobile texting will offer peace of mind in service-limited areas, and 89% find it beneficial for travel in regions with poor cell coverage.
Rogers customers on select plans will have access to the satellite service at no extra cost, while others can subscribe for $15 per month. Additionally, Rogers will soon introduce satellite-to-mobile connectivity for IoT applications, catering to industries like fleet and asset tracking, as well as automated sensors for sectors such as forestry and mining.
