Rogers Satellite Expands Horizons: Google Maps, WhatsApp, and Weather Apps Now at Your Fingertips!

Rogers Communication Introduces Satellite Apps for Seamless Communication and Navigation in Remote Areas

Rogers Communication has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative to enhance communication and navigation in areas with limited or no service. The new satellite program, initially launched in July, is set to go commercial on December 9, offering a range of essential apps designed to facilitate connectivity even in remote locations.

Among the apps featured in the launch are popular platforms such as WhatsApp, Google Maps, Accuweather, C, and CalTopo, with more apps expected to join the lineup as developers adapt their products to function over satellite networks.

Following a successful beta trial that saw over one million texts sent, the satellite service is poised to expand to include data and voice services, including critical features like 911 access, in the coming year. Top usage areas during the trial included Garibaldi in B.C. and Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario.

A recent survey conducted by Rogers revealed significant support for the satellite-to-mobile texting service, with 86% of Canadians expressing confidence in its ability to provide peace of mind in areas with no cellular coverage. Additionally, 89% believed the service would be invaluable for navigation in regions lacking cell service while traveling.

Rogers customers on select plans will receive access to the satellite service at no additional cost, while others can subscribe for $15 per month. In addition to personal communication, the company will also introduce satellite-to-mobile connectivity for IoT applications, catering to sectors such as fleet and asset tracking, forestry, and mining.

Rogers Communication’s innovative satellite program represents a significant leap towards ensuring seamless communication and navigation in even the most remote areas, offering a lifeline for individuals and businesses operating in challenging environments.
