Ontario Liberal Party Urges Sale of U.S. Booze Stockpile for Charity
The Ontario Liberal Party is putting pressure on Doug Ford’s government to offload the province’s stash of American alcohol currently languishing in storage.
John Fraser, the Liberal parliamentary Leader, is advocating for Ford to instruct the Liquor Control Board of Ontario to sell the alcohol and contribute the proceeds to food banks.
This move comes after Ford ordered the removal of American liquor from LCBO shelves back in March following the imposition of tariffs on Canadian products by U.S. President Donald Trump.
The province reports that approximately $80 million worth of American booze is stockpiled, with an estimated $2 million worth at risk of expiration within the next six months.
While the province is considering the suggestion, it has not made a firm decision yet, stating that the American alcohol will remain in storage while various options are explored.
In a similar vein, Newfoundland and Labrador recently announced plans to sell their U.S. alcohol stocks for charitable purposes, following the lead of Manitoba and Nova Scotia.
