Quebecers are being warned about an upcoming rise in electricity rates, with two recent studies emphasizing its necessity for the energy transition.
In recent years, the provincial government has been keeping rate increases in check. However, from 2020 to 2025, residential rates were tied to inflation with a maximum annual increase of three percent if inflation surpassed this threshold.
The Institut du Québec highlights a notable issue arising from this capped increase – a loss of $60 million in revenue from Hydro-Québec for the government in the past year.
