Toronto Police Board Greenlights Record $94 Million Budget for 2026: What It Means for the City

Toronto Police Service’s 2026 Budget Boosts Resources for Faster Emergency Response

Toronto Police Service Board has greenlit the 2026 budget, totaling $93.8 million, marking a seven percent increase from the previous year. With the aim to enhance public safety, the budget includes plans to hire 143 new uniformed officers to expedite emergency responses and bolster investigative capabilities for quicker case resolutions.

A significant aspect of the budget entails the addition of 40 new civilian positions strategically assigned based on operational needs. Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw emphasized the budget’s alignment with their hiring strategy to ensure more officers are available on the frontlines to address residents’ needs promptly. Furthermore, the budget expansion will also facilitate the expansion of the Neighbourhood Community Officer (NCO) program and boost police presence in the transit system.

Funding for the police budget primarily relies on property taxes, accounting for 84% of the revenue, with the remainder sourced from various grants and revenue streams. Pending final approval, the 2026 operating budget is projected to reach $1.43 billion, reflecting the city’s commitment to enhancing public safety and law enforcement capabilities.
