Around 100 employees at the Kruger carton packaging plant in LaSalle have initiated a week-long strike starting Wednesday.
This strike comes on the heels of a previous one in November, which lasted for just a day and a half.
The primary issue at hand revolves around wage increases.
Members of the union overwhelmingly rejected the latest offers, with a vote against them at 92.5 per cent this past Saturday. These offers were part of a compromise suggested by the mediator handling the case.
Benoît St-Cyr, the union president, emphasized the necessity of a future collective agreement that safeguards workers from financial strain caused by the rising inflation experienced during the previous agreement.
The union is associated with the Fédération de l’industrie manufacturière, which is under the umbrella of the CSN.
On the other side, company management contests the claim that their proposals would lead to a decline in employees’ financial well-being. They maintain that their offer not only accounts for recent inflation but also enhances the purchasing power of their workers in the long run. The management chose not to elaborate further on the matter.
