Abbotsford Ramps Up Emergency Measures, Expands Evacuation Alerts to Sumas Prairie West and Clayburn Village

Heavy Rainfall Prompts Evacuation Alerts in Fraser Valley, B.C.

A significant weather event hit British Columbia’s south coast on Wednesday, leading to evacuation alerts and orders for properties in the Fraser Valley.

The City of Abbotsford took action just before 4 p.m., issuing evacuation alerts for properties in Sumas Prairie West and Clayburn Village.

Residents in the potentially affected areas will receive hand-delivered notices from emergency services, urging them to plan ahead for possible evacuations.

Officials reassured the public that while this atmospheric river event is not expected to be as severe as the 2021 incident, the aftermath could surpass the flooding experienced in 2020.

Among the risks posed by the heavy rainfall is the potential flooding of the Nooksack River, prompting Abbotsford authorities to coordinate with counterparts in Whatcom County, Washington state.

City officials anticipate the Nooksack River to overtop its banks and overflow, with water potentially crossing the Canada/U.S.A. border within hours.

As a precaution, Cole Road at the dike will be closed, and residents are asked to report any drainage issues or flooding to local authorities.

For updates and assistance, residents can contact the city at 604-853-5485 or 604-864-5552.
