“B.C. Battles On: Ongoing Flood Crisis Deepens, Authorities Update Status”

The province of British Columbia is facing ongoing challenges in response to severe flooding caused by record-setting rains from an atmospheric river. Minister Kelly Greene of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness emphasized the continued difficulties faced by families, farmers, and communities impacted by the flooding. Despite the rain subsiding, the emergency is far from over, with the Nooksack River still posing a threat of rising water levels.

Expressing gratitude towards the dedicated crews, neighbors, and response teams, Greene acknowledged the collective efforts in providing assistance and support. Currently, approximately 400 properties remain under evacuation orders, with an additional 1,800 under alerts in the Fraser Valley and Okanagan-Similkameen regions. Emergency staff are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of those affected, offering essential support services and deploying flood assets such as sandbags and tiger dams to protect properties and livestock.

Minister Lana Popham of Agriculture and Food highlighted the impact of the flooding on farms, with 66 farms under evacuation orders and 99 on alert. Despite the challenges faced by the agricultural community, resources and support are readily available to mitigate the effects of this natural disaster.

Dave Campbell, the head of B.C.’s River Forecast Centre, warned that flood warnings are still in effect in the Fraser Valley, with ongoing flooding anticipated. He explained the continued risk of river overflow and emphasized the forthcoming rainfall, with another atmospheric river expected to impact the region on Sunday and Monday.
