A proposal put forward by city councillor Brad Bradford suggests a money-back guarantee for TTC riders facing delays of 15 minutes or more. Under Bradford’s customer-focused initiative, passengers would be entitled to a refund similar to the system in place for GO Transit users. While the specifics of this guarantee, such as funding and implementation, remain unclear, Bradford emphasizes the importance of holding the transit system accountable for its performance.
Bradford, who is also a mayoral candidate, highlights that jurisdictions worldwide have successfully implemented similar refund programs at a minimal cost relative to total trips. He stresses the need for improved accountability and performance within the TTC, stating that such policies are essential for fostering a culture of excellence.
A motion is scheduled to be presented to City Council in the upcoming week, aiming to instruct the TTC to establish a refund scheme for passengers affected by delays. This proposal comes in the wake of recent disruptions on the Finch LRT due to switch issues, raising concerns about the reliability of the transit network.
While TTC Chair Jamaal Myers clarified that maintenance of the LRTs falls under a third party, not the TTC itself, efforts are being made to address operational challenges. The TTC Board has approved a motion to collaborate with Metrolinx and other stakeholders to prioritize signal improvements for the LRT, although significant changes are not anticipated until the new year.
