A mother who abandoned her three-year-old daughter on a highway in June has been granted a six-month extension in psychiatric care, as decided by a Quebec judge on Wednesday.
The little girl, who was found safe after a three-day search in Ontario, is now out of harm’s way.
Due to being diagnosed with mixed mania along with psychotic symptoms, the 34-year-old mother was deemed not criminally responsible for her distressing actions.
In a positive turn of events, the judge approved her transition from the Philippe-Pinel psychiatric institute to the Douglas Institute, recognizing her progress and the ongoing necessity for treatment.
Under the care of her psychiatrist, she is currently stable, adhering to medication, has ceased using cannabis, and is assessed as not posing a threat to her child at present.
While the possibility of residing in a supervised setting or with a family member may arise in the future, she has yet to reunite with her daughter.
The case will undergo reevaluation after the next six months.
