Hydro-Québec to Boost Wind Energy Projects with Focus on Local Communities
Hydro-Québec is gearing up to roll out a fresh call for tenders for wind energy ventures come springtime. The sunny south of the province is buzzing with potential spots earmarked to play host to wind farms.
The Crown corporation is all set to up its game, vowing to ramp up criteria to champion Quebec-made goods and services and ensure societal approval in the tender process.
Emphasis will be placed on local elements during project evaluations, with a stipulation that the thumbs up from the municipalities involved is a must. Hydro-Québec is keen on fostering ventures that are developed in collaboration with local communities and Indigenous groups.
These upcoming wind farms will be on a smaller scale compared to the larger projects unveiled in recent times.
In another exciting development, the government-owned utility has revealed a map pinpointing potential spots to weave wind power into the electricity grid. It has zeroed in on 13 booming industrial sectors where the demand for grid connection studies was at its peak as of December.
Highlighted areas sprawl across regions south of the majestic St. Lawrence River, including Bécancour, Sorel-Tracy, Contrecoeur, Varennes, and Beauharnois. Also on the radar are Montréal-Est, Coteau-du-Lac, and further up north, with mentions of Saguenay, Sept-Îles, Baie-Comeau, and Chibougamau.
