Get ready to spread joy this holiday season with the return of the special red giving machines popping up in popular shopping areas around Montreal. These unique vending machines are part of the heartwarming ‘Light the World’ initiative, allowing people to easily donate essential items like meals, clean water, hygiene kits, and more with just a swipe of a card.
Olivia Hutchinson, the communications director at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, shared the simple yet impactful concept behind the giving machines. She explained, “It’s a way for people to donate in person, giving kids a tangible experience of giving to others rather than just donating online.”
Following the success of last year’s launch events at Complexe Desjardins and Carrefour Angrignon, the Giving Machines are back for a second year with three locations in Montreal. Hutchinson expressed her excitement for the expansion, aiming to shed light on lesser-known charities locally and globally.
The initiative from last year gathered over 2,000 donations for seven participating charities, with all proceeds going directly to the organizations. Local Montreal groups like Old Brewery Mission, Sun Youth, and Maisons de la paix were among the beneficiaries, receiving crucial support for their initiatives.
Marylène Dubois, the communication & philanthropy director at Maisons de la paix, expressed gratitude for the assistance received, highlighting the impact of the donations on their ability to provide essential items for women and children in need.
This year, the Giving Machines feature major international organizations like CARE and UNICEF, allowing donors to contribute to causes such as providing food, vaccinations, and support for children in need.
For those who missed the previous launch events, mark your calendars for the final event at Santa Village in Carrefour Angrignon on December 13th at 11:00 a.m. Join the ribbon cutting ceremony with representatives from the charities, special appearances, and a chance to make a difference this holiday season through the power of giving.
