Ontario Legislature Extends Winter Recess to 14 Weeks, Coming After a Lengthy 19-Week Summer Break

The Ontario legislature is gearing up for a 14-week winter break, just a short time after returning from a lengthy 19-week summer hiatus.

Traditionally, members of the provincial parliament reconvene at Queen’s Park in mid-February after the holiday season, following Family Day. However, on the final day of this year’s session, government House leader Steve Clark announced that the legislature will not reconvene until March 23.

Clark emphasized the importance for politicians to return to their respective ridings, engage with constituents, and focus on implementing the legislation they have previously passed.

Despite this schedule, Liberal parliamentary leader John Fraser criticized the extended break as “crazy.” Meanwhile, Green Party Leader Mike Schreiner expressed concern over the government’s accelerated bill processing and restricted debate, viewing these actions as potential threats to the democratic process.
