“Overwhelming Silence: Study Reveals Most Intimate Partner Violence Cases in Quebec Go Unreported”

A recent study conducted by Quebec’s statistics institute reveals a significant underreporting of intimate partner violence to the police, with the majority of victims choosing not to report such incidents.

According to the analysis, a staggering 74% of women and 83% of men who experience intimate partner violence do not notify law enforcement. The study further highlights that 40% of adult Quebec women in relationships have encountered intimate partner violence, while the figure stands at 26% for men.

The Institut de la statistique du Québec’s research indicates that victims are more inclined to seek police intervention in cases of physical or sexual violence as opposed to psychological abuse or coercion. Interestingly, individuals above the age of 29 are more likely to reach out to the authorities compared to younger victims.

These findings are based on a comprehensive survey on intimate partner violence conducted between 2021 and 2022, involving over 13,500 women and 10,900 men. The study’s insights shed light on the discrepancies between actual incidents of intimate partner violence and official police reports in Quebec.
