Porter Airlines flight dispatchers, represented by the Canadian Airline Dispatchers Association (CALDA), have unanimously voted in favor of strike action. This decision comes after over 14 months of negotiations without reaching a collective agreement. The 35 certified dispatchers at Porter support the strike mandate, seeking recognition for their crucial role in overseeing flight operations across the airline’s various networks.
CALDA has criticized Porter Airlines for allegedly disrespecting the dispatchers and has raised concerns about the airline training non-unionized staff as potential replacements in the event of a strike. Union president Rob King condemned this practice as unsafe and irresponsible, highlighting the vital role dispatchers play in ensuring flight safety as certified aviation professionals.
In response, Porter Airlines stated that it values the dispatchers’ contributions and has presented what they believe to be fair proposals during negotiations. The airline emphasized that conciliation talks are ongoing and assured that there is currently no immediate risk of a labor disruption.
