Ontario Premier Doug Ford Rejects Plan to Sell U.S. Alcohol Stockpile for Charity
Ontario Premier Doug Ford has dismissed the idea of selling off a stockpile of American alcohol stored in the province to benefit charities during the holiday season. The proposal to direct the Liquor Control Board of Ontario to sell the booze and donate the proceeds to charities like food banks was pushed by the provincial Liberals.
This stockpile, valued at around $80 million, was removed from LCBO shelves earlier this year after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on Canadian goods. However, approximately $2 million worth of these goods could expire within the next six months.
Ford explained that selling the alcohol is not a straightforward decision, especially during the festive season, as it might deter consumers from choosing local Ontario alternatives. He did mention that he would be more open to the idea if the alcohol could be sold outside the province.
