Pope Leo XIV, in a heartfelt address, condemned the recent Sydney Hanukkah tragedy as a horrific act of antisemitic violence. During a gathering with donors for the Vatican’s Christmas decorations, he sent prayers for peace and unity during this festive time.
Expressing deep concern, Leo called for an end to hatred and bigotry, emphasizing the need to eradicate antisemitic violence. The tragic incident at Bondi Beach claimed the lives of at least 15 individuals who were attending a joyous “Chanukah by the Sea” celebration. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese labeled the massacre as an act of antisemitic terrorism.
The Pope extended his sympathies in a telegram to the archbishop of Sydney, urging a shift towards peace and solidarity instead of violence. Leo also highlighted the significance of the Christmas decorations, including evergreen fir trees symbolizing life and hope, and a Nativity scene adorned with ribbons representing saved lives from abortion.
In his touching remarks, he emphasized the importance of valuing life from its very beginning and thanked those who support mothers in need. Leo’s message resonated with a powerful reminder that every life is precious and deserving of protection.
