Effective immediately, new regulations require truck drivers to undergo mandatory training in order to obtain a Class 1 licence.
In a recent press release, Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility Jonatan Julien introduced the new requirement for individuals seeking a Class 1 driver’s licence. The mandate stipulates that candidates must successfully complete one of the two endorsed training programs established by the ministry.
The Professional Entry-Level Driver Training Program (PESR) for Class 1 license consists of a minimum of 125 hours, comprising 75 hours of theoretical instruction and 50 hours of practical training.
Existing holders of a valid Class 1 licence are exempt from the mandatory training provision.
To facilitate a smooth transition, the ministry has put in place interim arrangements allowing individuals who have already initiated the Class 1 licence acquisition process to proceed under the previous regulations before December 15, subject to specific conditions.
Furthermore, the ministry has highlighted the availability of financial support for those interested in pursuing the mandatory training program.
