An Uber driver of Muslim faith faced a frightening situation when a passenger allegedly threatened him with a knife, prompting concerns raised by the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM).
The NCCM has labeled the incident on Dec. 6 near Saint-Antoine Street at Place Jean-Paul-Riopelle as an “Islamophobic attack,” stating that the driver was put at risk in a terrifying encounter.
According to the NCCM, the passenger is reported to have demanded the driver reveal his faith before issuing a threat. The tense situation escalated with the passenger menacingly declaring, “I’m going to slit your throat,” while brandishing a knife.
Thanks to the courageous intervention of another passenger, a potential tragedy was averted, as highlighted by the NCCM in a recent press release.
Expressing concern over the incident, NCCM CEO Stephen Brown emphasized the need for political leaders to unequivocally reject such acts of hatred, particularly in Quebec where the incident occurred. Brown urged for a clear stance against anti-Muslim sentiments and urged decisive action to curb the spread of such hostility.
The NCCM has called on politicians to publicly denounce the alleged attack and take steps to address the rising wave of intolerance.
