The Quebec Liberal Party Leader, Pablo Rodriguez, has refuted any involvement in alleged illegal activities that reportedly occurred during his campaign for leadership.
A recent report by Journal de Montréal detailed claims that roughly 20 donors to Rodriguez’s leadership bid were handed envelopes containing $500 each to reimburse their donations. These purported transactions occurred in April at a fundraising event hosted by an unnamed wealthy individual.
Rodriguez’s team responded to the allegations, asserting that neither the leader nor his campaign team had knowledge of any such reimbursements to donors. They explained that the individual responsible for the reimbursements was only identified following tips from a journalist and scrutiny of Rodriguez’s schedule.
The team clarified that the individual admitted to reimbursing some employees who could not afford to attend the event, an action deemed unacceptable by Rodriguez’s camp. They have taken steps to file a complaint with the Unité permanente anticorruption (UPAC) and the Chief Electoral Officer, labeling the act as unethical and against campaign regulations.
Despite facing mounting pressure and calls for resignation since mid-November, Rodriguez continues to maintain his innocence and resolve to remain in his post while combating the accusations against him.
