Schools in Châteauguay and Kahnawake enacted safety measures on Tuesday morning following a concerning online message hinting at a potential mass shooting.
The message, allegedly stating “Mass shooting incoming,” triggered swift action from local authorities, leading to a shelter-in-place protocol being implemented across various educational institutions.
Among those affected were elementary schools in the Châteauguay area, Howard S. Billings Regional High School, the Nova Career Centre, and the New Frontiers School Board offices, as specified in a statement by the board. During the shelter-in-place, students and staff were advised to remain indoors and carry on with their usual activities as much as possible.
Châteauguay police were quick to respond, deploying officers to monitor the situation and ensure the safety of the community.
The New Frontiers School Board emphasized that while the threat was concerning, there was no direct danger within the school premises. The shelter-in-place order signified a precautionary measure in response to a potential nearby threat, distinct from a lockdown, which indicates an immediate danger in or around the school.
The Kahnawake Mohawk Peacekeepers confirmed their investigation into the incident and highlighted the importance of avoiding the spread of false information that can incite unnecessary fear in the community.
Following the thorough checks and assessments, the shelter-in-place was lifted in the early afternoon, allowing for the safe and gradual release of students to their parents.
