A Vancouver man is now facing a third charge of second-degree murder for the deaths of three women in East Vancouver in September.
Viet Quy John Ly, 54, was taken into custody on Sept. 5 near Joyce Street and Vanness Avenue, where two women were found deceased. Around the same time, Jinfeng Guan, 50, was discovered with critical injuries in a nearby residential building and later succumbed to them on Sept. 11.
Initially charged with two counts of second-degree murder, Ly has now been additionally charged in connection with Guan’s death.
Police revealed that Guan was the former spouse of Ly, prompting a Vancouver women’s advocacy group to demand transparency on the relationships between the accused and the victims. Angela Marie MacDougall of Battered Women’s Support Services highlighted the incident as part of a concerning pattern of gender-based violence.
The Vancouver Police Department has not disclosed the nature of Ly’s relationship with the other two women involved. Ly is currently in police custody.
