During a week of heavy rain in Metro Vancouver, a local charity is urgently seeking donations of rain gear and winter coats to provide warmth and dryness for its community members.
Nick Wells, spokesperson for Union Gospel Mission (UGM), emphasized the critical need for donations. Wells stated, “We are completely out of winter coats. Our mobile team and volunteers who distribute clothing in the community have informed us of the scarcity.”
While UGM regularly distributes ponchos, their supply is depleting rapidly. The inclement weather poses even greater challenges for those experiencing homelessness in staying warm and dry.
Wells explained, “Our primary concern is ensuring that community members remain dry, while also assisting those who are already wet in getting dry again. The damp conditions can pose serious health risks, as evidenced by the rise in gangrene cases in the Downtown Eastside, exacerbated by the wet and unsanitary environment.”
To support UGM’s mission, donations of rain gear, winter coats, toques, gloves, neck warmers, shoes, socks, men’s underwear, joggers, and monetary contributions are welcomed. The charity’s Vancouver location on East Hastings Street features a drop-off box near reception for donations, which are sorted and made available to those in need every Monday and Wednesday.
Wells showcased the variety of items available for donation, including winter essentials like toques, gloves, and socks, which are in high demand.
