“Quebec to Overhaul Rent Calculation: What You Need to Know About the Impending Changes”

Quebec is set to simplify rent calculations with new regulations taking effect on Jan. 1, 2026. Landlords will now be able to adjust lease terms for tenants whose leases expire on July 1 each year.

This initiative is part of the Quebec Housing Strategy, aimed at modernizing how rent prices are determined. The goal is to provide clearer and more transparent calculations to avoid disputes that may end up at the Quebec Rental Board.

Minister Caroline Proulx emphasized the importance of updating rent calculation methods to align with current economic and social conditions. The revised approach aims to offer both tenants and landlords a more predictable and user-friendly tool for setting rents that reflect cost-of-living changes.

To help stakeholders understand the new rules, several webinars will be available starting Jan. 9, 2026. These sessions are open to the public and can be accessed by registering on the Quebec Rental Board website.
