STM Strike Escalates: Maintenance Professionals Walk Out Again in Ongoing Labor Dispute

Montreal Transit Corporation (STM) Faces Dual Strikes: Professionals Join Maintenance Employees

The Montreal Transit Corporation (STM) is facing a dual strike as 800 professionals from the Professional and Office Employees Union (SEPB) have joined the 2,400 maintenance employees in their ongoing work stoppage.

The SEPB, affiliated with the FTQ, initiated an overtime strike at 12:01 a.m. yesterday, set to continue until Jan. 11. Notably, this marks the first strike by the SEPB in its 31-year history.

The SEPB union represents a variety of professionals, including engineers, analysts, architects, and consultants working in IT, planning, infrastructure, and finance services.

Despite the strike, the STM has assured users that service delivery will not be significantly impacted.

This latest strike by the SEPB adds to the ongoing work stoppage by maintenance workers, affiliated with the CSN, which began on Dec. 11 and also involves a refusal to work overtime.

Both strikes fall under the purview of the Administrative Labour Tribunal, which ensures that essential services are maintained during the labor actions.
