“21 Arrested as Police Smash Multi-Provincial Retail Theft Syndicate”

Hamilton Police have successfully dismantled a major organized retail theft ring that was operating across provinces in Canada, including Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia. This achievement came after an extensive months-long investigation.

The operation led to a series of coordinated raids and arrests carried out across the country, resulting in the seizure of over $1 million worth of stolen goods. Known as Project Sommes, the investigation was initiated in August 2025 by Hamilton police, who had identified individuals connected to a string of large-scale thefts targeting various Shoppers Drug Mart outlets in the city.

Authorities uncovered a sophisticated criminal network responsible for hundreds of thefts dating back to February 2024. The stolen merchandise was reportedly funneled to a man in Mississauga, who allegedly distributed it to wholesalers, including AG Liquidation in Brampton.

On December 16, officers executed 16 search warrants in southern Ontario as part of the operation. Two suspects had previously traveled to Vancouver and were allegedly continuing their theft activities there. They were apprehended by Vancouver police and are set to be extradited back to Hamilton.

In total, 21 individuals are now facing a combined total of 175 charges, including a 75-year-old and three minors under the age of 18. Many of the suspects were already on release orders or had outstanding warrants before their arrests.

Hamilton Police Deputy Chief Ryan Diodati emphasized the significant impact of retail theft on the community, stressing that it is not a victimless crime. He highlighted the repercussions of such crimes, including higher prices and reduced product availability for consumers.

Similarly, Peel Regional Police Deputy Chief Marc Andrews pointed out the growing threat of organized retail crime in Canada, affecting businesses and families alike. He emphasized that these criminal activities have widespread implications across communities.
