A team of activists, known as the “Street Robins,” made a bold move by breaking into a Metro supermarket on Monday night and walking away with $3,000 worth of food. To make their statement against the increasing food prices and corporate greed, the trio disguised themselves as Santa Clauses and elves.
In a post shared by Les Soulèvements du Fleuve – The River’s Uprisings, the group highlighted their mission in a press release, stating, “We are toiling harder each day just to afford groceries from supermarket giants who are exploiting inflation to rake in massive profits. The exorbitant rents, food costs, and other essentials are being artificially inflated by major capitalist entities. A few corporations control our basic necessities, suffocating the populace and draining their finances for pure greed. To us, this is theft, and they are the true culprits.”
The stolen goods were later distributed to the local community in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, symbolically placed under a Christmas tree.
Accusing major grocery chains of taking advantage of inflation to boost their gains at the expense of struggling workers and families, the group aims to shed light on the growing issue of food insecurity in Quebec. Experts are already warning that grocery expenses will continue to rise in 2026.
