GTA Braces for Pothole Explosion: Freeze-Thaw Cycles Set to Wreak Havoc on Roads

Toronto is experiencing a rollercoaster of temperatures, leading to the perfect recipe for potholes and risky driving conditions.

Natasha Ramsahai, the chief meteorologist at CityNews, explains that the fluctuation between warm and cold weather is causing water to seep into cracks in the roads. As temperatures rise, the water freezes and pushes up the concrete, eventually leading to the formation of potholes when the ground thaws.

This freeze-thaw cycle is predicted to persist well into early 2026 and the beginning of spring, creating ongoing challenges for commuters in the city.

Despite a foggy start on Thursday, temperatures are expected to climb to a range of 7°C to 11°C later in the day. However, a quick drop in temperature is anticipated on Friday as a new wave of cold air arrives.

Rainfall is forecasted to start Thursday night and carry on into Friday morning, with estimates of five to 10 millimetres. This precipitation, combined with decreasing temperatures, will likely result in dangerous road conditions throughout Friday.

By Friday afternoon and evening, temperatures are projected to plummet to -3°C and -5°C, with a chance of up to two centimetres of snowfall.

The weekend will bring more temperature fluctuations, with a high of 2°C on Saturday and a drop to -3°C on Sunday.
